Rutabaga vs Potato – WHO WILL WIN?

We all know potatoes. But are you familiar with RUTABAGA? It is also known as a ‘yellow turnip’, but let’s be honest – rutabaga is a much more fun word.
Rutabagas have a slightly sweet taste and are not bitter like a turnip. You can mash them, bake them, add them in soups and casseroles, and do roughly the same things that you would as with a potato. According to Wikipedia, Ireland and Scotland use them as Jack o lanterns, instead of pumpkins!

Rutabaga vs Turnip

Turnips are brighter colored and have more of a ‘white’ base

A cup of cooked rutabaga = 12 net carbs, 66 calories, 2 g protein
A cup of cooked potatoes = 30 net carbs, 135 calories, 2 g protein

Mr. Potato has MORE THAN TWICE the carbs and calories of rutabaga!!

So next time you want some comfort food, peel, chop up and boil that bad boy. Drain and mash it up with a fork/masher with some cream, cheese and butter and dig in!

Mashed rutabaga is the ultimate comfort food.

Here is a mash recipe and you can turn them into noodles as well!
