Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Rice Review (plus stir fried ‘rice’ recipe)

Trader Jo's Cauliflower Rice

The bag is small and it’s obvious I buy a lot of stuff from Trader Joe’s.

That’s right. Trader Joe’s now sells pre-made cauliflower rice. ORGANIC Trader Joe’s cauliflower rice.

My first thought was ‘gee, it’s not that tough to make cauliflower rice’. Then I thought about the nights when I’m starving, cranky and don’t want to deal with breaking down and processing a cauliflower. Which is pretty often, honestly.

So last night I trotted down to the local TJ’s and after wandering back and forth through the frozen aisle a few times, finally found it. The bags were a lot smaller than I thought. They only set me back $2 ($2.07 after tax) a bag.

Came home and microwaved it for about 2 – 3 minutes to thaw it out. Measured it, and it came out to about 2.5 cups of cauliflower rice (results may vary). What I found to be very interesting (and awesome) was that after thawing, it wasn’t sitting in a pool of liquid. Not soggy at all.

Trader Joe's cauliflower rice volume

Thawed rice, measured out to over 2 cups.

The grain is a tad larger than I usually make for rice, but you could easily put it in the processor if you want it finer. I liked how consistent the grain was as well.

Trader Joe's cauliflower rice grain size

Grain size is good. Allows for you to adjust if you want to make it smaller.

Tasted fresh. Although the ingredients say it has salt, you can’t taste it. Here is a link to an image of the nutritional content plus ingredients.
All in all, I think I may be buying this product again in the future for sure. I hope TJ’s keeps it. The taste was on point, the grain size was consistent, and $2 for 2.5 cups of cauliflower rice + convenience = worth my time and money.

For comparison, a large head of organic cauliflower will run you around $3-4 dollars. You can get about 4+ cups from a large head of cauliflower. So Trader Joe’s rice is about 80 cents a cup. Making it yourself will probably get the cost down to 50 cents a cup (it’s difficult to calculate, as a lot of places sell cauliflower by weight).

Threw together a stir fried ‘recipe’. Essentially, whatever is loafing around in your fridge works great 🙂

Stir Fried YUM

I know it seems like a lot of steps, but it’s not. It all just naturally progresses as you hang out and chop chop chop.

Have you tried the Trader Joe’s cauliflower rice yet? If so, what did you think?

I bought 4 yesterday. I haven’t even used it yet but I am really excited. I don’t like grating cauliflower and if you don’t clean up right away it dries up and is a pain to remove from bowls and utensils. Looking forward to cauliflower everything!

YES I can’t stand how when it dries up, it gets stuck to everything. Even if you rinse out the dishes, I still find cauli-particles everywhere. Let me know how you end up using the caulirice and how you like it!
Also, if you have a moment, let me know how much yours measures out to as well.

I hadn’t seen the frozen stuff. I have seen fresh riced cauliflower in the Trader Joe’s produce section. I’ve got some that I threw in the freezer as soon as I got it home. It’s much more convenient than ricing your own.

The frozen bags seem to have disappeared and yah, now I am seeing the fresh version as well. I totes threw them in the freezer as well. 100% better than trashing your kitchen with cauli-particles ^_^

YAY! YES! TJ’s rice cauliflower is one of my favorites. Other brands are now getting faaaaaaaaaancy with riced cauliflower (such as a pilaf version) and it’s really adding a lot of dimension.
So glad you liked it! All these years I thought cauliflower was a lousy, watery veggie. Now I eat so much of it.
