My first thought was ‘gee, it’s not that tough to make cauliflower rice’. Then I thought about the nights when I’m starving, cranky and don’t want to deal with breaking down and processing a cauliflower. Which is pretty often, honestly.
So last night I trotted down to the local TJ’s and after wandering back and forth through the frozen aisle a few times, finally found it. The bags were a lot smaller than I thought. They only set me back $2 ($2.07 after tax) a bag.
Came home and microwaved it for about 2 – 3 minutes to thaw it out. Measured it, and it came out to about 2.5 cups of cauliflower rice (results may vary). What I found to be very interesting (and awesome) was that after thawing, it wasn’t sitting in a pool of liquid. Not soggy at all.
The grain is a tad larger than I usually make for rice, but you could easily put it in the processor if you want it finer. I liked how consistent the grain was as well.
Tasted fresh. Although the ingredients say it has salt, you can’t taste it. Here is a link to an image of the nutritional content plus ingredients.
All in all, I think I may be buying this product again in the future for sure. I hope TJ’s keeps it. The taste was on point, the grain size was consistent, and $2 for 2.5 cups of cauliflower rice + convenience = worth my time and money.
For comparison, a large head of organic cauliflower will run you around $3-4 dollars. You can get about 4+ cups from a large head of cauliflower. So Trader Joe’s rice is about 80 cents a cup. Making it yourself will probably get the cost down to 50 cents a cup (it’s difficult to calculate, as a lot of places sell cauliflower by weight).
Threw together a stir fried ‘recipe’. Essentially, whatever is loafing around in your fridge works great 🙂
Trader Joe's Cauliflower Rice Review (plus stir fried 'rice' recipe)
- 1 bag Trader Joe's Cauliflower Rice
- 2 cloves Garlic
- Shallots or half an onion
- Fresh Ginger
- 2 Carrots
- 2 Zucchini Small
- 1 Red Bell Pepper
- 1 handful Walnuts
- Meat i used leftover rib eye
- 2 Eggs
- 5 tablespoons Soy Sauce
- Heat up pan and add cooking oil of choice (my current obsession is avocado oil, due to it's tastelessness and high smoke point)
- Finely mince garlic and shallots, add to pan (use this time to prep carrots and ginger)
- Add carrots and ginger to pan, allow to cook for a bit (use this time to prep bell pepper and zucchini)
- Add bell pepper and zucchini to pan, cook until softening (use this time to get the rest of the ingredients ready, such as chopping up the meat and cracking the eggs into a bowl to whisk)
- Add cauliflower rice and walnuts, cook until softened to personal preference
- Add meat and soy sauce, stir to blend tastes
- Push cooking food to the side and cook the eggs in the side of the pan- once mostly cooked, mix in with the rest of the food
- Taste and adjust seasoning to personal preference (such as soy sauce, any additional spices, salt and pepper)
I know it seems like a lot of steps, but it’s not. It all just naturally progresses as you hang out and chop chop chop.
