Kitchen Tool Tuesday: Cast Iron Grill Pan

I finally broke down and bought a cast iron grill pan (the Lodge Pre-Seasoned Square Grill Pan, 10.5-inch, to be exact), after watching a contestant on Chopped grill up some butternut squash.
And considering the pan I got was only $22 on Amazon with free shipping, I was out of excuses.

NO MORE BROILING MY RIB EYE.

Grilled butternut squash

Are those grill lines not sexy AND delicious looking??

Twas like Christmas, playing with a new toy. I used it that night! The pan heated up evenly and consistently. Used cooking spray (Trader Joe’s coconut oil cooking spray, to be exact) and slapped down my butternut squash. The lovely (and delicious) results are above.

This can be used not only as a cooking tool, but a weapon.

Then the real test came – grilling up some rib eye steaks. If you are a follower of the LowCarbKitty Facebook page, you will know I have a serious love of rib eye and eat it at least once a week. I have been broiling it, as I do not have a grill (or a grill pan, until I ordered this bad boy).

IT PASSED THE TEST!!! My rib eye steaks had a gorgeous sear on them. In the picture below, the upper steak was my broiled steak. Tasty, but no sear, no caramelization or extra texture. Below is a steak that was grilled on the pan. Utterly delicious, never going back to the broiler (which, by the way, is no fun to clean up).

Needless to say, I’m an grill pan convert. Vegetables…meat…cats (?), watch out! You’re next!
